If you walk into a networking event thinking it’s a room full of prospects, you’re already off track.
That mindset can derail even the most skilled sales rep or solo business owner. Why? Because networking isn’t the same as prospecting, not if you want long-term results.
The best solo professionals, especially those in services or consulting, show up with a different lens. They’re not looking for their next sale. They’re looking for connectors. People who know people. Folks who refer work their way because they trust them, not because they got pitched over a tiny plate of cheese and crackers.
And trust doesn’t get built in your elevator pitch.
It comes from curiosity, shared stories, and small moments that make someone want to remember you.
Here’s what’s worked for me over the years:
- Don’t pitch at the event.
Not ever. Nobody enjoys getting pitched at a mixer. They’ll remember you if you were enjoyable to talk to — not if you rattled off your feature list. - Make it personal.
Sure, ask what they do. But then go deeper: Why did they get into it? The “why” often opens a door into their values, background, or a personal story they’re proud of. That’s where real rapport starts. - Give them an easy way to refer you.
Depending on your industry, you might use a short sentence that sticks. Something like, “If you ever run into an electrician in South Pinellas, I can help them get more leads.” Specifics matter. I fight my own urge to explain too much — but a short, memorable cue helps them connect the dots later.
You’re not trying to get five leads from the people in the room. You’re trying to earn five referrals from people who leave the room thinking about you when the right moment shows up.
As I often say to our clients at Accent on Demand: “The best lead doesn’t come from who you meet. It comes from who they talk to after.”
In St. Pete and across Tampa Bay, where word-of-mouth still matters, that makes a difference. Especially if you’re solo, reputation is your real funnel.
If your current approach to networking feels awkward or fruitless, maybe the answer isn’t to try harder. It’s to stop selling the room.
At Accent on Demand, we help solo professionals and lean teams get seen for the right reasons, from how you show up in person to how you build trust online. If you’re tired of networking without follow-up, give us a call.
