Why Most B2B Websites Don’t Convert (and How to Spot the Problem in 15 Minutes)

[Reading Time: 2 minutes]

If you’re getting decent traffic to your B2B website but the leads aren’t following, it’s not always your ads. Nine times out of ten, the issue is the user journey — not the channel.

Most companies never audit it. Or if they do, it’s a design critique, not a functional walkthrough. We’ve run a 15-minute user journey audit on three client websites this quarter alone — and each one cut their wasted ad spend by 30% or more within two weeks. Here’s how.

The 15-Minute Walkthrough

Start by putting yourself in a cold visitor’s shoes. Not a fan. Not someone who’s already heard of your brand. Just someone Googling a solution. Then follow this flow:

  1. Start from a Top Search Result or Ad
Click into your site from a Google search or one of your paid ads. See what the headline offers. Is it promising value that your page actually delivers?
  2. Scan for Trust Builders
Within the first few scrolls, there should be social proof. Think testimonials, recognizable logos, certifications, or partner names. If not, people bounce.
  3. Try to Contact Sales
Not “read more.” Not “explore our products.” Actually find and complete the lead form. Was it easy? Clear? Or did you feel like giving up halfway?
  4. Look for Friction
Time how long it takes to find your pricing or request a demo. If you can’t do either without clicking three or more times, you’ve lost your best buyers.

What This Uncovers

We’ve seen this audit reveal broken forms, unclear calls to action, out-of-date pages still pulling in paid traffic, and confusing contact options — like three phone numbers and no clear reason to pick one.

“It’s usually not one big problem. It’s six small ones that stack,” said Mike Martino, Co-Founder at Accent On Demand. “If it’s hard to buy from you, or unclear what you do, you’re lighting your ad dollars on fire.”

How to Fix It Fast

After your audit, group the issues into two buckets:

  • Fix Now: Anything confusing, broken, or outdated
  • Test Next: Calls to action, form layouts, and messaging

And if you’re in a business where leads need routing into CRMs or backed by secure data, make sure your form connects cleanly to the next step. We’ve seen clients lose leads because the forms weren’t hooked up right — and nobody knew.
